Biography (400wd)
Samuel Penderbayne is an Australian composer and performer, living and working in Hamburg, Germany. He holds a Bachelor of Music (Honours 1, Sydney Conservatorium of Music), a Masters of Music (Hochschule für Musik und Theater, Munich), and is currently a Doctoral Fellow at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater, Hamburg. Composition teachers include: Prof. Matthew Hindson, Mr. Michael Smetanin, Prof. Anne Boyd, Prof. Moritz Eggert and Prof. Fredrik Schwenk, and for supervision of the doctoral thesis, Prof. Reinhard Flender.
Concert performances of his works include those by the Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Tasmanian symphony orchestras in Australia (including in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House) and workshops and/or performances by Arditti Quartet, Ensemble Oktopus, The Breakout Ensemble, Sirius Quartet and Asian Art Ensemble in Germany. He is currently working on a chamber opera with librettist Helmut Krausser for the Hamburg State Opera (Opera Sabile) with a premiere in early-2018.
Samuel is a keen collaborator, composing new music for theater (Schauspielhaus Frankfurt, Metropoltheater and Prinzregententheater in Munich, Theaterhaus Jena and Theater Bremen and Theaterhaus Trier), dance (Nemian Dance Company, Iwanson International) and film music for documentaries and short films (Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen, München). As an early member of the Kapitael Zwei Kolektiv (sic) he performed for nine days in the Schaustelle der Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, part of a large-scale 'endurance performance' called Konkordia by Ersan Mondtag.
In 2014, he co-founded the Munich-based ensemble The Breakout Ensemble with colleagues from the composition class of Prof. Moritz Eggert. In that same year, the ensemble received the coveted Förderpreis der Landeshauptstadt München and performed in the Gasteig (BlackBox) and Akademie der Schönen Künste (et al), including having a performance audio-visually recorded and broadcast internationally by Arte and BBC.
Apart from a professional life as a composer, Samuel has experience and training as a vocalist (tenor), conductor (orchestral, choral, chamber) and music administrator (having worked at Sydney Symphony, Limelight Magazine and The Breakout Ensemble). An extended interest in electronics has grown over the past years, and now forms a significant part of his output. This includes both live and pre-produced electronic music.
From a background contemporary classical composition, Samuel searches for a 'third space' between other musical traditions including electronic-, world-, rock- and jazz-music. He is to be seen often singing and performing his music, solo or with colleagues. The topic of his dissertation, currently being written, is Guidelines for Connecting Modern Musical Genres with the Classical Tradition.
